Background
AriensCo.’s legacy logos often involve a graphic of a gear, and we decided to roll with that (so to speak). Inspired by kinetic sculptures with exposed gear trains, I set out to design an art piece that would reference the company’s history, and serve as an introduction to the museum tour.
Design and Development
To design the gear train, I used SolidWorks and partnered with AriensCo. engineers to figure out the sizes of the gears that I would need. I laser cut them out and made maquettes to make sure it would work, and work it did!
Fabrication and Installation
The piece was fabricated out of high density foam, mounted on a metal frame, and powered with a motor. Instead of glass covering the piece, we decided to block the space off so curious fingers would not find their way to the gears.
